"Straus is a detached witness of the nature to which he is deeply attached." Donald Kuspit, Artforum

"Man, Straus so aptly shows in his tiny figures atop his mountains, is still a long way from finding his home on this planet" Raymond J. Steiner, Art Times

Welcome to our Earth Day 2006 Issue!

    Guest-Artist: Adam Straus

    ARTIST STATEMENT

"Usually my landscapes are formed from bits and pieces of real places used to create a fictitious place--landscape as metaphor for social landscape. The difference in the Long Island, New York exhibition is that most of these oil paintings represented actual places that would be recognizable if you went there. I think of them as romantic, an attempt to capture a certain light and atmosphere-that magical time a few days a month when the full moon rises just before dark. Yet, they are mainly depictions of places that are threatened with encroaching development and may well not exist within a short period of time". Adam Straus/2006/EARTH DAY 2006

Adam Straus was born in Miami Beach, Florida, in 1956. His degrees include a B.A. from Miami-Dade Community College, a B.S. in Mathematics from the University of Florida, in Gainesville, and an M.F.A. from Florida State University in Tallahassee. Besides winning numerous prizes in juried competitions, Straus received a grant from the Southern Arts Federation and a Painting Fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts. He moved to New York in 1990 and has been represented by Nohra Haime Gallery in New York ever since. He currently lives and works in Riverhead, New York.
