BRAIN PLASTICITY is a process that involves adaptive structural and functional changes to the brain. It is defined as the ability of the nervous system to change its activity in response to intrinsic or extrinsic stimuli by reorganizing its structure, functions, and/or connections.
In his own words:
"The new science of mind attempts to penetrate the mystery of consciousness, including the ultimate mystery: how each person's brain creates the consciousness of a unique self and the sense of free will..."
"We have found that the neural networks of the brain are not fixed...We know that even though the words of the maxim, know thyself (per se), are no longer encoded in stone in Delphi, they are encoded in our brains. For centuries the maxim has been preserved in human memory by those molecular processes in the brain that you graciously recognize today, and that we are just beginning to understand."
On the question of Emotion,"Antonio Damasio argues that the experience of emotion is essentially a higher order representation of the bodily reactions and that this representation can be stable and persistent. As a result of Damasio's work a consensus is emerging on how emotions are generated." Eric R. Kandel, Winner of the Nobel Prize 2000
