SMART PROJECT SPACE 2008 UPDATE

SMART PROJECT SPACE Artist Matthieu Laurette presents:

ARTISTS BIOPIC CINEMA

Featuring Rembrandt, Vermeer, Frida Kahlo, Pollock, Warhol and others at

SMART PROJECT SPACE/AMSTERDAM

Exhibition until 21 December 2008

ARTISTS'BIOPIC CINEMA is a solo exhibition organized in conjunction with
  • 'La Vie d'Artiste' Exhibition at SMART PROJECT SPACE in Amsterdam

The ARTISTS' BIOPIC CINEMA Exhibition transverses all 6 gallery spaces at SPS which artist Matthie Laurette playfully described as "a sort of Institutional Critique meets Film Industry meets Art Sociology meets Art Economy meets Art History".

In transforming all six-gallery spaces into mini cinemas, Laurette presents the 'mythologized life of the artist' through screening 18 specifically chosen full-length feature films daily representing mythical characters - Andy Warhol, Rembrandt, Vincent van Gogh, Francis Bacon, Frida Kahlo and Salvador Dali and other famous artists.

The allegory of the artist as a temperamental genius and free from the constraints of society is played out in Laurette's new work and visitors are given an excellent opportunity to observe ways in which the film industry cultivates, feeds and perpetuates the myth of the artist-genius.

Matthieu Laurette established himself in the 1990s with his exploration of the relationships between art, spectacle, media and economy using a variety of media, from TV and video to installation and public interventions.
